Xavier

For Xavier, past mistakes led to time in prison. He was determined to start over, find a career to support himself and be able to strengthen his relationship with his daughter. Upon release, Xavier took part in Project Now. This Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids program offers free training for in-demand and well-paying careers, teaches employability and life skills, and provides job search and placement assistance.

Xavier was interested in obtaining a CDL license to start a career driving commercial trucks. He quickly studied for and passed the knowledge tests to earn his Commercial Learners Permit. Xavier went on to complete training with West Michigan CDL. After training, he passed the skills tests and was officially awarded his Commercial Drivers License. Reflecting on his time in the program, Xavier’s Goodwill career coach stated, “Xavier was courteous of other’s time, always showing up for scheduled appointments and was very attentive to his CDL training classes.”

With his new skills, license, and confidence in sharing his story, Xavier secured a semi-truck driver position with Holland Special Delivery. Employed now for over a year and a half, Xavier has new accomplishments to be proud. One of which was being able to purchase a house in his hometown. He also drives his daughter to school and thoroughly enjoys this time, but most of all, he is thrilled that he can spend regular time with her and be more involved in her life.
